This work indicates that the defect sites provide partially filled d-orbitals that stabilize free-radical intermediates. Strong evidence for this hypothesis is that the sites can be selectively knocked out by treatment with OH • radicals generated by Fenton's reagent. The knockout effect is demonstrated using oxygen reduction, hydrogen reduction, and the redox electrochemistry of hydroquinone.

Nanocrystalline gold catalysts: A reflection on catalyst discovery and the nature of active sites

complex as we deal with highly complex mixtures of structures that co-exist in the active catalyst. There may in many cases not just be a single structure for an active site, rather there may be a range of structures which display a broad spectrum of activities and specificities. For example in heterogeneously catalysed oxidation catalysis different sites are considered responsible for the form...

Fabrication of an Electrochemical Immunosensor for Determination of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Based on PtNPs/Cysteamine/AgNPs as an Efficient Interface

An ultrasensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of tumor marker human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) was developed with a limit of detection as low as 2 pg mL-1 in phosphate buffer. The Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) were electrodeposited to modify the gold surface and to increase enlarging the electrochemically active sites, resulting in the facilitation of electron exchange. Cy...

Heavy Metals Tolerance Potential of Fungi Species Isolated from Gold Mine Tailings in Ghana

Introduction: Heavy metal contamination has necessitated a less expensive and non-destructive clean-up technique such as mycoremediation. This study aimed to isolate, identify, and evaluate the tolerance of fungi species in different concentrations of heavy metals for their potential use in bioremediation. Materials and Methods: Fungi were isolated by serial dilution and spread plate technique...

Utilisation of gold nanoparticles on amine-functionalised UiO-66 (NH2-UiO-66) nanocrystals for selective tandem catalytic reactions.

Colloidal deposition of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) onto NH2-UiO-66 nanocrystals has been demonstrated with the resulting hybrid catalyst proving robust and versatile for one-pot, heterogeneous conversions involving the selective oxidation of primary alcohols in tandem with Knoevenagel condensation reactions. Within these systems, structure-property correlations have been established to confirm...

Nanosized mesoporous composite PW12-APTES@KIT-6: An efficient heterogeneous catalyst for selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones

Surface of mesostructured silica, KIT-6, was modified by grafting 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) to have the positive charge, and thus, to provide sites for the immobilization of H3PW12O40 (PW12).  This modified-nanosized mesoporous silica (PW12-APTES@ KIT-6) was characterized by FTIR, XRD, BET and TEM. The oxidation of sulfides occurs effectively and selectively with H2O2 as the oxidant...
